THE Goal

1951 Peter Withe born in Liverpool. After an unsuccessful start to his career with Southport and Barrow he went to America and South Africa in order to restore his confidence, arriving back in England in November 1973 and signing for Wolves. After just 12 games he was sold to Birmingham City, remaining at St Andrew's for a year before Brian Clough signed him for Nottingham Forest. Here he linked with Tony Woodcock and inspired the club to promotion from the Second Division and then the First Division title the following season. By the time Forest won the European Cup Peter had already left, signed by Newcastle United in August 1978.

Villa paid their then record fee of £500,000 to sign him in May 1980 and he proved the catalyst for the championship-winning side, netting 20 goals during the course of the season. The following year he scored the winning goal in the European Cup final and also collected five caps for England in his five seasons with the club. After Villa he had spells playing for Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Huddersfield before returning to Villa Park as Jozef Venglos's assistant. He later managed Wimbledon in his own right but was sacked and returned once again to Villa Park to serve the club as chief scout.
