Reserves draw at Southport

20/07/2008 10:32

Manchester City's reserves opened their pre-season campaign with a deserved 1-1 draw away at Southport yesterday.

The game provided Kelvin Etuhu the chance to prove his fitness after recent trouble with a knee injury, the forward came through 72 minutes of proceedings at Haig Avenue.

Shaleum Logan too played for 72 minutes as Mark Hughes used this fixture to assess a number of members from last season's FA Youth Cup winning team combined with young reserves from last year.

As for the game itself, City's attempts to adjust to the windy conditions early on saw the Sandgrounders sneak in to take a third minute lead with a goal from Gray.

Try as they might the young Blues couldn't claim an equaliser, mainly due to the performance of Steven Drench in the Southport goal, but he could only parry Ian Daly's 90th minute shot into the path of substitute James Poole who finished it off and gave City a share of the spoils.

City:
Martin, Logan (Vidal 72), Williamson (Morris 72), Clayton (Kay 61), McDonald (Brown 46), McGivern (Ramsey 46), Weiss (McDermott 61), Marshall, D.Ball (Poole 46), Etuhu (Daly 72), Moore.

unused subs: Hartley (GK).
